Schiehallion

Sunday 16 April 2006

The afternoon of Sunday 16 April was spent climbing Schiehallion from the Braes of Foss.

We had originally planned a longer day climbing two munros Sgor Gaibhre & Carn Dearg.  However when we stopped the car at the starting point north of Loch Eigheach the wind and rain were strong enough to make us reconsider.

After mulling over some of the options with a coffee & bacon roll at Rannoch Station tea room we returned to the car and unexpectedly met fellow Edinburgh JMCS committee member Stewart Bauchop with his partner Donna and children Eilidh & Harris.

They had spent the previous night camping nearby and planned a short walk past the Dubh Lochan to Loch Laidon.  When the weather cleared the view across Rannoch Moor to the Black Mount covered in fresh spring snow was great and worth the long drive to the road end.

Still some snow on the mountains

Schiehallion is a well known Perthshire peak that is now owned by the John Muir Trust.  Footpath rebuilding and conservation has reduced erosion and improved the route to the top.  Anna and me have climbed the mountain a number of times before; the last time was with Ian Cameron on 15 May 2005.

Sunshine and showers created a rainbow on the way down

On the way home we stopped in Perth and went to Paco's restaurant for a quick bite to eat.  A good Easter Sunday day out.
